​GOVERNOR P.S. SREEDHARAN PILLAI LAYS WREATH AT WAR MEMORIAL ON VIJAY DIWAS - 16th December 2019

On the occasion of the anniversary of India's military victory over Pakistan in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 a formal wreath laying programme was held at War Memorial, Treasury Square in the capital this morning. Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai was the first in line to pay homage to the heroes of Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 by laying a wreath on the pedestal of the War Memorial. Shri. Lalchamliana, Home Minister was the second to pay homage followed by Shri. Lalnunmawia Chuaugo, Chief Secretary, Shri. SBK Singh, DGP, Shri. Lalbiakzama, Home Secretary, Shri. Vanlalngaihsaka, Deputy Commissioner, Col. GRV Reddy, Station Commander, Station HQ Aizawl and the rests comprising of military officials and retired military personnel .

Vijay Diwas(Victory Day) is commemorated every 16 December in India, to Indian military's victory over Pakistan in Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 for the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan. The end of the war also resulted in the unilateral and unconditional surrender of the Pakistan Army and subsequent secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh. On this day in 1971, the chief of the Pakistani forces, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93,000 troops, surrendered to the allied forces consists of Indian Army and Mukti Bahini, led by General Jagit Singh Aurora, of India in the Ramna Race Course, now Suhrawardy Udyan, in Dhaka after their defeat in the war. The Same day and event is commemorated in Bangladesh as Bijoy Dibos.
