State Level Celebrations of Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh

Aizawl, the 14th November, 2025: In a grand commemoration marking the 150th birth anniversary of the legendary tribal leader and icon of resistance against colonial rule, Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh – Tribal Pride Day’ was celebrated today at the Raj Bhavan Circular Lawn in Aizawl. The event, organised by the Planning & Programme Implementation (P&PI) Department, was graced by Mizoram Governor, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), as the chief guest.

Addressing the gathering, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, extended warm greetings to the people of Mizoram on the occasion of Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh, emphasising its profound significance in honouring the contributions, resilience, and enduring legacy of India’s tribal communities. He affirmed that every Indian citizen is deeply connected to tribal identity, observing that while some communities have moved away from their ancestral traditions, others -particularly the Mizos – continue to cherish and uphold their vibrant cultural heritage with pride. Commending the tribal people’s intrinsic harmony with nature and their essential role in fostering sustainability, the Governor lauded the Prime Minister’s steadfast commitment to protecting and elevating the dignity of tribal traditions.

The Governor further highlighted the pivotal role of tribal communities in India’s freedom struggle and their unified resistance against colonial rule, transcending barriers of religion or tribe. He noted that Mizoram, too, had played a vital part in this historic movement. He praised the Central Government’s forward-looking initiatives under the Prime Minister’s leadership, designed to deliver balanced and inclusive development across all tribal regions through focused programmes in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and beyond. Expressing optimism that Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh would ignite fresh dedication to sustainable progress and equitable growth, he urged every section of society to share collective responsibility in realising these aspirations.

General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh also underscored the pressing need for environmentally responsible development, cautioning against the dangers of ecological neglect. He called upon all stakeholders to unite in pursuit of the national vision of a developed India -Viksit Bharat @2047 -and made a special appeal to the Mizo tribal community to progress resolutely while safeguarding their distinct identity and cherished cultural values.

Pu Vanlaldina Fanai, Commissioner & Secretary, P&PI Department, highlighted the Ministry of Tribal Affairs’ transformative initiatives, including the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DAJGUA), Adi Karmayogi Abhiyan, and grants under Article 275(1), which have significantly uplifted tribal livelihoods. He mentioned the Mizoram Government’s proactive alignment with Central schemes and acknowledged the unwavering support of officials, community leaders, NGOs, and citizens in driving development.

As part of the tribute to tribal icons, floral tributes were offered before portraits of Birsa Munda- the architect of the ‘Ulgulan Movement’ against British colonial rule – alongside Mizoram’s revered freedom fighters Nikuala, Lianphunga and Khuangchera, honoring their sacrifices for the nation. Pi Chingthanmawii, Adviser-cum-Joint Secretary, P&PI Department, delivered the welcome address and elaborated on the significance and objectives of Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh. The Mizo Cultural Organisation enthralled the audience with vibrant displays of traditional dances, attire, and customs, vividly showcasing the richness of Mizo tribal life.

The celebration also featured the inauguration of a Tribal Freedom Fighter Wall, alongside exhibitions of local crafts, handlooms, culinary delights, and innovative exhibitions. After the formal programme, the Governor personally visited the stalls, interacting with artisans and innovators to understand their work. The exhibitions will remain open to the public today and tomorrow and the Planning and Programme Implementation Department has encouraged the public to visit and participate in this event.

One of the greatest Mizo chiefs, Nikuala of Chawngtlai village, valiantly defended his people by keeping the eastern invaders at bay and maintaining peace among the Lushai tribes. Lianphunga, the courageous son of Sailo Chief Suakpuilala, fought tirelessly to protect his land from the British invasion of the Lushai Hills. He is remembered as one of Mizoram’s earliest freedom fighters who sacrificed his life for his homeland. Another legendary warrior, Khuangchera, is celebrated in Mizo history for his unmatched strength and courage. He led a brave attack on the Changsil Fort and was killed in battle in September 1890.

The event served as a powerful reminder of tribal contributions to India’s freedom and cultural tapestry, while reinforcing the collective resolve toward a prosperous and sustainable future.
