Mizoram Governor Inaugurates Key Meetings of Central Agricultural University
Aizawl, the 22nd June, 2026: Mizoram Governor, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), formally inaugurated three important meetings of the Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal – the 15th Research Council Meeting, the 11th Extension Education Council Meeting and the 33rd Academic Council Meeting – at the College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry (CVSc & AH), Selesih, Aizawl today. The meetings are scheduled to be held from June 22 to 24, 2026.
In his inaugural address, Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh described Central Agricultural University as a beacon of agricultural innovation for the entire North East region. He emphasised that the three councils – Research, Extension Education and Academic – comprehensively cover work in laboratories, delivery in the field and learning in the classroom, which truly embodies the essence of “Lab to Land” learning.
The Governor expressed appreciation for CAU’s recently prepared policy document titled “Transformation of the Mizoram Economy from US Dollar 540 Million to US Dollar 6,394 Million @ 2047”. He noted that since Mizoram’s economy is largely agro-based, this comprehensive strategic economic and policy blueprint holds immense potential to shape a bright future for the state. While acknowledging that the shift from a “business as usual” scenario may appear challenging, he expressed confidence that with a true transformation and a clear shift in focus from mere production to actual farmer income, the targets could be achieved well before 2047 if stakeholders aim high and work diligently.
He stressed the need for clear and meaningful roles for districts and communities in agricultural development, ensuring that no one is left behind. The Governor highlighted that agriculture and allied sectors form the backbone of the rural economy and, if managed properly, can play a transformative role in realizing the national vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. He commended the Central Government’s various initiatives for farmers’ welfare and called for stronger collaboration between scientists, faculty members, researchers and farmers. He urged them to go beyond mere development of new technologies and focus on value addition, entrepreneurship, sustainable livelihood opportunities, market linkages, and eco-friendly practices. He further encouraged innovative ideas and effective outreach programmes to ensure that knowledge and technologies reach farmers at the last mile through awareness campaigns.
Praising the efforts of scientists and experts under CAU in advancing agriculture and allied sectors in Northeast India, the Governor assured his continued support. He expressed hope that the three council meetings would yield fruitful outcomes, stating “The future of the North Eastern Region and a prosperous Viksit Bharat will be grown in your laboratories, taught in your classrooms and harvested in our fields. Together, let us work with determination so that by 2047, Mizoram and the entire Northeast emerge as models of self-reliant, sustainable and inclusive hill agriculture for the whole nation.”
Dr. Anupam Mishra, Vice-Chancellor of CAU, delivered the welcome address. He described CAU as one of India’s premier agricultural universities and highlighted the tremendous opportunities presented by the diversity of the Northeast for agriculture and allied sciences. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to working dedicatedly for the welfare of the region and the nation. He informed the gathering that CAU currently operates 13 Constituent Colleges, 6 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), 6 Multi Technology Testing Centres and 6 Vocational Training and Testing Centres across the Northeast.
During the event, the Governor formally handed over technologies developed by the College of Community Science, Tura, Meghalaya (under CAU) Strawberry Jam, Litchi Jam and Mango King Chilli Sauce – to Mr. Harshit T., Manager (Marketing Strategy), PRIME Rural, Shillong, Meghalaya. He also officially launched four Comilla Cotton Meditech Products jointly developed by the College of Community Science, Tura and ICAR-CICR, Nagpur. The Governor also distributed lavender and coriander seeds to farmers from Aizawl, Saitual, Serchhip and Champhai districts.
