Aizawl, the 24th July, 2026: Indian Telecommunications Service (ITS) Probationary Officers of the 2023 Batch, currently on their “North East Study Visit”, called on Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd) today at Lok Bhavan in Aizawl.

Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh welcomed a group of Indian Telecom Service (ITS) officers and underscored their pivotal future role as the backbone of India’s telecom sector and key policymakers. He expressed appreciation for their proactive initiative in undertaking a field visit to gain first-hand insights into the ground realities of North East India, noting that the perception of the region has transformed significantly. Once viewed as remote, inaccessible and culturally distant, the North East is now seen as a vibrant and well-connected area, thanks to the Government of India’s Act East Policy, which has driven substantial development and progress comparable to other parts of the country, with improved connectivity, digitisation and robust data highways, he added.

The Governor described the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project as a game-changer under the Act East Policy that is expected to usher in comprehensive all-round development across the region. He urged the telecom officials to prepare well in advance, as the project’s completion would bring significant opportunities and planning requirements for the telecom sector. He added that under the Act East Policy, the North East states are poised for steady progress in trade, commerce, tourism, connectivity, investment and other key sectors. Highlighting the growing importance of the telecom sector in the digital economy, the Governor called the officers the bridge that provides all means of communication to the people and stressed that a strong telecom infrastructure is essential for all-round development in the region. He particularly urged them to ensure full network coverage, especially in strategically located Mizoram.

The North East Study Visit aims to familiarise the ITS Probationary Officers with the existing challenges in telecom connectivity and infrastructure in the region and to help them identify possible solutions.

The five ITS Probationary Officers were accompanied by Dr. S.K. Samanta, ITS, Deputy Director General, SC Unit Mizoram, along with other senior officials from the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India.
