Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati graces special program on International Day of Sign Languages
Aizawl, the 22nd September 2023: Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati and Lady Governor Dr. Jayashree Kambhampati graced a Program organized by Spastic Society of Mizoram at Gilead Special School (GSS), Bawngkawn Brigade, Aizawl on the occasion of International Day of Sign Languages, today. This year’s theme is – “A World Where Deaf People Everywhere Can Sign Anywhere!”
In his opening note, Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati on this special occasion extended his warm greetings to all the special children and their parents at the school and others within the state. He thanked the organisers for inviting him on such a unique occasion like this and for creating the much-needed mass awareness.
He congratulated the Spastic Society of Mizoram and the administration at the Gilead Special School, Bawngkawn Brigade for successfully running and keeps improving such a unique institution for more than 30 years to provide special services to differently-abled children.
He shared his appreciation of the school for providing skill training through a Vocational Training Centre and Skill Development wing at the school. He was also very impressed to learn that more and more past students were getting jobs and livelihoods in various mainstream occupations. On the occasion, the Governor remarked, “The International Day of Sign Languages is a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users”.
He urged all the helping hands and the people involved in operating the Gilead Special School to keep up the good work with renewed vigour and enthusiastic services. In this connection, he also assured them of his continued support in their future endeavours.

After his address, Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati launched the Instagram Account and YouTube Channel of the Spastic Society of Mizoram. As reported the social media accounts were created to spread awareness about children with special needs and also help the parents of these children who are elsewhere in the state.
Pi Chhingpuii, Chairperson, Spastic Society of Mizoram chairs the program on the occasion of International Day of Sign Languages, today at Gilead Special School. On behalf of the institute, Prof Margaret Ch Zama, Director of Services, GSS gave a report on the school’s history and achievements. The program concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Pi Zokhumi, Vice Chairperson, Spastic Society of Mizoram. After the formal program was concluded, Governor and Lady Governor interacted with the key members of the spastic society of Mizoram and also of the institute. The Governor also visited all the classrooms and thereby interacted with the students and their teachers.
