Aijal Club marks the anniversary of signing of Mizoram Peace Accord with Celebration Program
Aizawl, the 28th June 2024: The Aijal Club organized the celebration program of the Signing of Mizoram Peace Accord at RB McCabe Hall, Aijal Club in the capital this evening. Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and addressed the gatherings.
The Mizoram Peace Accord, 1986 was an official agreement between the Government of India and the Mizo National Front (MNF) to end insurgency in Mizoram that was started in 1966. The document titled Mizoram Accord, 1986: Memorandum of Settlement was signed on June 30, 1986, by Pu Laldenga (MNF), Shri RD Pradhan, Home Secretary, Government of India and Pu Lalkhama, Chief Secretary, Government of Mizoram.
In his opening address, Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati extended a warm greeting to all the citizens across the state in the spirit of unity, hope, and celebration, to mark the historic signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord, fondly referred to as ‘Remna Ni’. The Governor signified this historic day in the annals of our history as a symbol of our collective commitment to peace, reconciliation, and progress.
On this auspicious occasion, the Governor expressed his deep appreciation to all those who contributed to the peace process to shape a brighter future for Mizoram. He also voiced his conviction that the Mizoram Peace Accord stands as a beacon of hope for our State and a shining example for others. He urged everyone to realize that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice, equality, and respect for all. And, he also stressed the need to pledge to uphold the values enshrined in the Accord, to work together in unity and solidarity, and to build a society where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
The Governor, in his concluding remark, took the opportunity to acknowledge the role of – Pu Laldenga, the Founder President of the Mizo National Front (MNF), for his pivotal role, his steadfast leadership and unwavering dedication to the cause of the Mizos, instrumental in bringing about this significant moment of peace and reconciliation. Pu Lal Thanhawla, who graciously made way for Pu Laldenga to assume the position of Chief Minister, his statesmanship, foresight, and willingness to set aside political differences for the greater good of the people of Mizoram, crucial in fostering an environment conducive to peace and reconciliation. Pu Lalduhoma, for his role as a mediator between the MNF and the Government of India, his tireless efforts, diplomatic skills, and commitment to facilitating dialogue and understanding between the two parties, instrumental in bridging the divides, and building trust necessary for the successful negotiation of the Peace Accord. The Governor also acknowledged the contributions of Pu Zoramthanga, Pu Ch. Chhunga and Brig. T. Sailo, the former Chief Ministers of Mizoram.
In his conclusion, Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati urged everyone in the state to reaffirm our commitment to peace, reconciliation, and progress with a dedication to renewed vigour and determination, as we aim to achieve a Viksit Bharat by the year 2047.
Chief Minister Pu Laduhoma, on this occasion, paid rich tribute to all the leaders and stakeholders who played their parts in the success of the Mizoram Peace Accord. He urged the people of Mizoram to learn from their past experiences to remain faithful and committed to the Indian democratic government. He said the Indian Government is the most considerable in terms of its commitment to uplift the conditions of the minority whether it is based on social, economic, caste or religion. He appealed to the people in the state to remain peace-loving and embrace peaceful coexistence with others to promote socio-economic growth and prosperity.
The celebration program commenced with a welcome speech by Dr Renu Sharma, Chief Secretary and President, the Aijal Club. The next segment was the screening of Video Exhibition: Mizoram Circa 1960 to 1990. This was followed with the felicitations of Pi Biakdiki, the wife of Pu Laldenga (L), Former Chief Minister of Mizoram, Pu Lalkhama, IAS (Rtd) Signatory of Mizoram Peace Accord, Pu Lal Thanhawla, Former Chief Minister of Mizoram, Pi Rothangi, the wife of Pu CH. Chhunga (L) Former Chief Minister of Mizoram, Pu Brig. T. Sailo (L) Former Chief Minister of Mizoram, Pu Zoramthanga, Former Chief Minister of Mizoram, and Pu Lalduhoma, Chief Minister of Mizoram. Apart from the address of the Chief Guest, there were short speeches from the dignitaries. The program concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Pu Rin Sanga, Vice President, Aijal Club. Outside the venue, the Aijal Club also organized Photo/Book Exhibition of ‘Remna Ni’ & Exhibition of Book’s related to the era.
