Aizawl, 2nd April 2025: Mizoram Governor, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), visited Lawngtlai District today. During his visit, the Governor held a meeting with MLAs, ADC leaders, government officials, Village Council members and NGO representatives in the district. He also handed over smart boards for 14 schools and provided assistance to fire victims in Diltlang South village.

Upon his arrival, the Governor was received at the Lawngtlai District Helipad by Deputy Commissioner Shri Cheemala Siva Gopal Reddy, Superintendent of Police Shri R. Lokeshwaran and other officials. A ceremonial guard of honor was accorded to him at the DC’s office in the presence of Adviser to the Chief Minister Dr. Lorrain Lalpekliana Chinzah, MLA; Shri Rasik Mohan Chakma, MLA; Shri V. Zirsanga, CEM, LADC and other officials.

In his address, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh acknowledged the contribution of Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) for providing smart boards to 14 schools through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative and lauded ITI Ltd. and the implementing partner, Living Thoughts Organization, for their efforts in setting up smart classrooms in the district. While underscoring the importance of primary and elementary education, he stated that the use of smart boards will enable students in remote areas to access quality education which is crucial for their development.

In this meeting, the Governor stressed the need for electrification of 13 villages in Lawngtlai District that still lack electricity. He urged government departments, VCs and NGOs to work together to support the underprivileged in their respective areas. He also clarified about recent issues regarding the Free Movement Regime (FMR), describing that FMR has been in place since long back and there are no plans to disturb it, but due to the current instability in the neighboring country, certain restriction has been laid out to ensure better security for both villages and citizens, as well as to prevent illegal activities across the border. He reassured that the new measures were not intended to create difficulties but to enhance the safety and well-being of the people. The Governor emphasized the increasing challenges of drug smuggling along the border and emphasised the need for collective efforts to maintain Mizoram as a peaceful and prosperous state. He also encouraged people to make full use of various important government schemes designed for their welfare.

During a meeting at the DC’s Conference Hall with government department officials, Village Council representatives and NGOs, Deputy Commissioner Shri Cheemala Siva Gopal Reddy gave a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the administration, security situation, key projects, challenges and available resources in the district. Deputy Commissioner Shri James Miahlung delivered a vote of thanks and concluded the meeting.

Later, the Governor met with fire victims from Diltlang South at the DC Office Chamber, where he expressed his deep concern and support. He instructed the District Commissioner to take necessary steps to ensure that those affected can rebuild their homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) housing scheme. Through the Governor’s Discretionary Grant, the Governor handed over financial assistance of Rs 1,00,000/- to 9 home owners, while 9 tenants received Rs 5,000/- each. The victims expressed their gratitude to the Governor for his support and financial assistance.

Following this, the Governor also met with MLAs, CEM and EMs from the two Autonomous District Councils – Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) and Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) at the DC’s Bungalow in Chawnhu, Lawngtlai.
