    Aizawl, the 12th December, 2024: Mizoram Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati today graced the 27th Annual General Meeting of the Mizoram Consumers’ Union (MCU) as the Chief Guest at the Synod Conference Centre, Sikulpuikawn, Aizawl. The event was also graced by Pi Saizikpuii, Director of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department, Govt. of Mizoram, as the Guest of Honour.

    Speaking on the occasion, Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati lauded the MCU’s efforts in advocating for consumer rights as enshrined in the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 and its related rules since its establishment in 1995. While mentioning various welfare measures designed for the consumers, he lauded the MCU’s efforts in resolving consumer grievances and facilitating services like home delivery of cooking gas. He also commended the MCU’s initiatives to create consumer organizations and clubs to enhance awareness to the general public and urged them to continue their noble efforts by upholding the six basic consumer rights: safety, information, choice, being heard, redressal and consumer education.

    Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati highlighted the government’s commitment to consumer protection through the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 including e-commerce concerns. The National Consumer Helpline, with toll-free number 1915 available in 17 languages, and upcoming improvements like NCH 2.0 aim to streamline complaint processes, reinforcing MCU’s role in safeguarding consumer rights through modern platforms, he added. He also underscored the importance of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act, 2016, the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, the Integrated Grievance Redressal Mechanism (INGRAM) portal and the ‘Jago Grahak Jago’ campaign, which raise consumer awareness and protection.

    Also speaking on the occasion, Pi Saizikpuii, stated that while remarkable advancements are being achieved in e-commerce through cutting-edge technology, it remains crucial to safeguard the rights and interests of consumers involved in such transactions. She emphasized the importance of protecting and educating consumers about their rights and responsibilities. She also mentioned the need for coordination between the Nodal Department and MCU to ensure proper implementation without any shortcomings.

    The event was presided over by MCU Vice President Pu Thanglura. MCU President Prof. Chawngsailova delivered a short speech and General Secretary Pu presented annual report and activities of the MCU.

    MCU currently has its headquarters operating in Aizawl along with 10 sub-headquarters in every district hqrs., it has 180 branches and 60 clubs.
