Governor Interacts with officials from Mizoram’s Agriculture and Horticulture Departments

Aizawl, the 23rd April, 2025: Mizoram Governor, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd) today interacted with officials from the State’s Agriculture and Horticulture Departments at the Raj Bhavan, focusing on sustainable agriculture initiatives and ongoing departmental initiatives.

In his opening address, the Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd) emphasized the urgent need to advance sustainable farming practices in the state, highlighting the importance of innovation, resource management and strategic planning. He noted that transitioning towards organic, fertilizer-free agriculture is not only essential but also timely. He called for stronger efforts in organic certification, establishing laboratories and maintaining high state-level standards to ensure the credibility of organic products through effective certification mechanisms.

The Governor also pointed out the need for a robust supply chain to ensure farmers benefit more and to minimize exploitation by intermediaries. He underscored the importance of improving processing techniques and enhancing the value of agricultural produce. He urged the two departments to continue collaborating with other relevant Central and State Line Departments for better coordination and development.

Special Secretary for Agriculture and Horticulture, Pi Ramdinliani stated that about 10% of Mizoram’s total geographical area is used for agriculture and horticulture activities. She also outlined various department schemes and projects aimed at reducing shifting cultivation, a traditional practice in the hills.

The meeting reviewed various schemes under the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments, including efforts to promote Mizoram as an organic state. Emphasis was placed on cluster-based farming, soil fertility improvement and capacity-building for organic farmers. The meeting highlighted ongoing work to set up two Integrated Processing Units for ginger processing and the procurement of 22 slicers and 22 solar dryers. Currently, Mizoram has 8,000 hectares of certified organic farmland, with an additional 5,500 hectares in progress for certification.

The meeting was attended by Agriculture Director Pu R. Lalnunzira, Horticulture Director Pu CH Lalmuanpuia and senior officials from both departments.
