Governor Meets School Education Officials to Discuss Key Initiatives

Aizawl, the 14th August, 2025: Mizoram Governor, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), held a productive meeting with School Education Department Secretary Pu David Lalthantluanga and other senior officials at Raj Bhavan today. The discussion centered on the effective implementation of central government schemes, the current state of education in Mizoram, and the department’s ongoing initiatives and future strategies to enhance educational outcomes.
Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh underscored the critical role of quality education in shaping students as the future backbone of the nation. He emphasized the need for robust implementation of central schemes and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to elevate educational standards. Highlighting the central government’s substantial investments in establishing premier institutions like Eklavya Model Residential Schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Sainik Schools and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in Mizoram, he urged the Mizo community to fully utilise these facilities. The Governor also stressed fostering a genuine passion for learning among students and ensuring accessible, high-quality educational infrastructure.
School Education Secretary Pu David Lalthantluanga provided a comprehensive overview of the department’s activities and initiatives. He detailed efforts to strengthen the curriculum through meticulously designed lesson plans, the introduction of common question papers for classes 3, 6, and 9 to improve student comprehension, and the contextualization of textbooks to enhance relevance. Additionally, bilingual textbooks are being developed to support effective learning. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to address teacher shortages and elevate the overall quality of education.
School Education Director Pi Angela Zothanpuii briefed the Governor on the successful implementation of the PM Poshan-Mid Day Meal scheme, while State Project Director Pu C. Lalthanzira elaborated on the key components of the Samagra Shiksha program, aimed at holistic educational development.
The meeting also addressed the strategic execution of central government schemes to advance education, curriculum development, and the adoption of NEP 2020. Emphasis was placed on the importance of community awareness and engagement, alongside addressing other critical educational priorities.
Official data indicates that Mizoram currently operates 4,418 schools, including 2,573 state government schools, 26 deficit schools, 340 government-aided schools and 1,479 private schools, serving approximately 3,00,000 students. Additionally, 35 PM SHRI schools are functioning in the state.
