Aizawl, the 12th November, 2025: As part of the ongoing ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative, Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), along with First Lady Smt. Bharti Singh, yesterday graced the celebration of the Foundation Day of Assam and Nagaland at the Durbar Hall of Lok Bhavan, Aizawl.

In his address, Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh extended warm greetings on the occasion of the Foundation Day of the two States. He remarked that Assam and Nagaland – like Mizoram – are endowed with rich cultural diversity and heritage. Highlighting the importance of Assam, he described it as a vital “gateway to the Northeast,” distinguished not only by its historical significance but also by its strategic geographical location. Speaking about Nagaland, he noted that the State is renowned for its numerous tribes and their exquisite traditional craftsmanship. He added that the celebrated Hornbill Festival has become a major attraction and expressed confidence that Mizoram could draw inspiration from Nagaland’s example to further strengthen its own tourism sector.

The Governor underscored that the Government of India’s Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat programme is a key national initiative aimed at deepening cultural understanding, promoting unity, and enhancing appreciation of India’s diverse traditions. Reaffirming the nation’s aspiration for a developed and progressive Vikshit Bharat, he emphasised that the youth bear a significant responsibility in shaping the country’s future. He urged young people to learn about the cultures of other communities, cultivate mutual respect, and contribute to building stronger bonds of harmony. He also cautioned against the growing spread of misinformation and divisive narratives on digital platforms, stressing that initiatives like Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat play a vital role in safeguarding unity and fostering national integration. The Governor encouraged the youth to proudly promote their own culture and traditions wherever they go.

The programme began with introductory remarks by Pi Lalhruaitluangi, APS to the Governor, who also explained the purpose of the event. This was followed by a video message from Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya. On behalf of Assam, Professor P.C. Kalita, President of the Assam Cultural Society and faculty member of the College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry (CVSc & AH), Selesih, shared insights about his State. Representing Nagaland, Dr. Bendangchuchang Longchar, Assistant Professor at Pachhunga University College (PUC), also delivered a presentation about Nagaland’s culture and heritage. A short video showcasing the history and cultural significance of both Assam and Nagaland was screened, and students from Assamese, Naga, and Mizo communities presented cultural performances depicting their respective traditions.

Following the formal programme, the Governor and the First Lady, Smt. Bharti Singh, hosted a brief interactive session with the invited guests at the Upper Lawn of Lok Bhavan, marking a pleasant conclusion to the event.

The Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat programme aims to strengthen cultural exchange, promote deeper mutual understanding, and foster national integration among the various States and Union Territories of India. Under this initiative, the celebration of the Foundation Days of different States and Union Territories has been regularly organised at the Lok Bhavan, Mizoram, under the leadership of the Governor since June 2023.
