Aizawl, the 23rd July, 2025: Pu Sudheer Kumar Dwivedi, Director & Head of the Meteorological Centre Aizawl under the India Meteorological Department (IMD), today delivered a comprehensive briefing to the Governor, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), at Raj Bhavan. The presentation detailed the ongoing initiatives and strategic plans for the future.

Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd) expressed his delight that the Meteorological Centre Aizawl will celebrate its second anniversary on July 27, 2025. He extended his appreciation to Director & Head Pu Sudheer Kumar Dwivedi and his team for their efforts. The Governor commended their work in providing accurate weather forecasts and critical data, urging them to intensify their efforts to disseminate information widely. He emphasized the need for closer collaboration with line departments and media to ensure weather updates are communicated effectively in the Mizo language for the benefit of the Mizo people. He also stressed the urgency of installing a weather radar in Mizoram at the earliest.

During the meeting, Pu Sudheer Kumar Dwivedi expressed gratitude for the Governor’s continued support and commitment to advancing the Meteorological Centre Aizawl’s objectives. He presented a detailed overview of the initiatives and future plans through a PowerPoint presentation.

Key initiatives include providing VVIP forecasts, seven-day weather forecasts, and an Aizawl Air Quality Index to attract tourists, along with tailored weather forecasts for four popular tourist destinations in Mizoram. Weather data updates, issued every six hours, are shared through social media and the official website.

The future plans, set for implementation this year, include installing a Doppler Weather Radar at Laipuitlang, Aizawl, as part of Mission Mausam. A new Meteorological Office will be established in Siaha, given that 90% of cyclonic activity impacting Mizoram comes from the southern region. Training and Awareness Centre for students will be created at the Meteorological Centre in Aizawl. Plans are also in place to upgrade the Aerodrome Meteorological Station (ASM) at Lengpui into an advanced Aerodrome Meteorological Office (AMO) in the near future.
