Mizoram Celebrates The 76th Republic Day

Aizawl, the 26th January 2025: Along with the rest of the nation, Mizoram celebrated the 76th Republic Day across the state with great zeal and fervour. In Aizawl City, the state capital where the biggest celebration was held, Governor Gen (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd) unfurled the National Flag and returned the salute accorded to the National Flag by the 23 parade contingents.
In his Republic Day address, the Governor General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd) extended greetings to the people of Mizoram on the occasion of the 76th Republic Day. He stated, “On this important day, we commemorate the adoption of our Constitution, which provides us with justice, liberty, and equality.” He emphasized that this day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who shaped our Constitution and ensured that we enjoy justice and freedom today. He further encouraged the people to work toward the unity and harmony of India, striving to live together peacefully and with purpose. He called upon the people of Mizoram to build a place where all can live with dignity, peace, prosperity and happiness. He acknowledged the efforts of various security agencies in curbing illegal cross-border activities, including smuggling, drug trafficking and arms trading. He emphasized the importance of collective action by the government, NGOs, churches and communities in tackling illegal activities and social issues.
On this occasion, the Governor highlighted several significant achievements and initiatives of the government. He mentioned that under the government’s flagship program ‘Bana Kaih (Hand Holding) Scheme’, efforts are being made to promote entrepreneurs and farmers through a series of targeted programs, while contributing to the realisation of Vikshit Bharat @ 2047. Under this scheme, Progress Partners will be provided loans from partner banks- SBI, MRB and MCAB for which collaboration agreements have already been signed and government will serve as a guarantor, he added. He also mentioned that the scheme includes the Chief Minister’s Special Category Scheme, which provides financial assistance of up to Rs 1 lakh. Governor also reiterated the government’s plan to implement Minimum Support Price (MSP) for four key crops – Ginger, Turmeric, Broom and Mizo Bird-eye chilli.
Key infrastructure developments, mentioned in the Governor’s speech also included the Public Works Department’s completion of 194 km of road construction, 264 km of blacktopping and 98 km of high-strength concrete roads within the year. In the education sector, new developments include the construction of 14 school buildings, 35 classrooms, 43 toilet blocks and renovation works at 18 schools. Measures are also being taken to address teacher shortages and a State owned University is being planned in line with the National Education Policy 2020.
H&FW Dept has recently upgraded 3 health clinics and 7 PHCs, facilities such as a 10 & 50-bedded AYUSH hospitals, 1 sub-divisional hospital, 3 new PHCs and 41 health sub-centers are under construction. Eight towns have achieved ODF+ status, while three districts have attained the ODF Plus Model status. Under the PMAY (G) scheme, 25,361 houses have been constructed with 4,605 still under construction. PM Ekta Mall will be constructed in Aizawl’s Chawnpui locality. The Mizoram Electric Vehicle Policy, 2024, was introduced recently. Mizoram Sports Incentive Cash Award Scheme was revamped to provide better support for athletes, with efforts underway to prepare for Mizoram’s participation in the 2036 Olympics. The Governor also highlighted technological advancements, such as the launch of an online land record management system. Meanwhile, initiatives to boost agriculture and livestock sectors include the construction of a new animal feed plant in Lengpui, edible oil processing plant in Falkawn, 3 new fish hatcheries and 148 hectares of new ponds in all the districts.

On the occasion of the 76th Republic Day celebration today, a total of 23 parade contingents participated, comprising 7 Armed Contingents, 4 Unarmed Contingents, 12 School Contingents, and 3 Band Parties. The Parade was led by Parade Commander Yatin Sharma, IPS and Second Commander Dr. Melvyn Varghese, IPS, who skillfully guided the contingents.
Governor General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh presented awards to the best parade contingents. In the Armed Category, the 2 Assam Rifles Contingent, 225 Bn CRPF and 5th IR Bn secured the first, second and third positions for their parade performances. In the Unarmed Category, the Ex-Servicemen Contingent, 20 Mizo Bn NCC (PUC) Contingent, and 1 Mizo Bn NCC secured the first, second, and third positions. Among school contingents, Oikos HSS, Neuhof English Medium School and Ephraim HSS secured the first, second and third positions for their parade performances as well.
