    Aizawl, the 25th March, 2025: Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), Chief Rector of Mizoram University, today graced and addressed the 19th Convocation of Mizoram University (MZU) at Multipurpose Hall, MZU Campus, Tanhril, as Chief Guest. Mizoram Chief Minister, Pu Lalduhoma, also attended the event as Guest of Honour.

    Before the commencement of the convocation programme, the Governor and Chief Minister, on arriving at the MZU Campus had planted the saplings.

    Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd), in his convocation address, congratulated all the graduates, gold medalists and prize winners of the 19th Convocation of Mizoram University. He expressed hope that the current graduates would contribute significantly to society and inspire future generations. Highlighting MZU’s role since it became a Central University in 2001, he praised its impact on Mizoram’s socio-economic growth and empowerment. He commended Mizoram University (MZU) for its remarkable accomplishments in various rankings, solidifying its reputation as a leading institution of higher learning in the region. He pointed out that MZU has secured the 77th position among Indian universities in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and has emerged as the top-ranked university among North East universities in the prestigious Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024. He further added that the university has achieved the 15th position among the top 20 Central Universities in India according to the Indian Institution Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2024.

    The Chief Rector of MZU also described the institution as a leading university in Northeast India with a promising future. He acknowledged its successful implementation of the Choice-Based Credit System since 2013, efforts in green energy, extensive use of e-journals, advanced faculty capabilities and collaborations with various institutions and corporations. He further appreciated the efforts of students engaged in community service and he remarked, “Education does not mean just academics. There has to be overall personality development so that the students can do well in life”. He expressed satisfaction with the recent passage of the ‘Mizoram State University Bill 2025’ by the Mizoram Assembly, envisioning MZU as a research intensive university by 2035.

    Chief Minister Lalduhoma, while addressing the graduates, expressed pride in MZU’s growth and status as a leading higher education institution in Northeast India. He highlighted MZU’s achievements, including receiving a Grade ‘A’ in the NAAC assessment for 2019-2024 and an ‘A’ Grade in the Green Audit Report by the Mizoram State Pollution Board. The Chief Minister appreciated the university’s leadership in online classes through MOOC and SWAYAM and shared plans for introducing new courses like LLM and integrated LLB in the campus. While emphasizing the need for making a ragging-free educational environment, the Chief Minister urged faculties and students of MZU, its affiliated colleges and constituent college to uphold the values of harmony and dignity within the academic space. He lauded the dedication of faculty members and encouraged students to strive for excellence for the betterment of society and the state.

    After the convocation opened with a declaration by the Registrar Prof. Lalnundanga, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka welcomed the gathering to the 19th convocation. The Vice-Chancellor continued with the Conferment of Degrees, Gold Medals and Prizes. The ceremony also witnessed the distribution of degrees, medals and prizes. MZU Registrar proposed vote of thanks and closed the convocation.

    During today’s Convocation, degrees were awarded to 7,724 students. 104 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), 567 Master’s Degree, 149 Professional Master’s Degree, 143 Bachelor’s Degree, 176 Professional Bachelor’s Degree, 51 Gold Medalists and 3 Book Prize winners received degrees in person.

    The 19th Convocation was attended by MZU faculties, staff, students and their family members.

    Established in 2001, Mizoram University currently has 37 departments and 2 centres which offer UG, PG and Ph.D programmes under 10 Schools of Study. It has 40 affiliated colleges and one constituent college.
