Mizoram Governor Discusses Ropeway Projects with MoRTH, NHLML & UD&PA Department Officials

Aizawl, June 17, 2025: Mizoram Governor, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), held a discussion today at Raj Bhavan with senior officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) and the State’s Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department, focusing on unlocking the potential of ropeway projects to drive transformative connectivity in Mizoram under the Government of India’s ambitious National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana.
Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh stressed the urgent need for innovative strategies to combat urban congestion, emphasizing the importance of advancing these initiatives. Noting the scarcity of vacant spaces in Aizawl, he advocated for exploring sites beyond the city center to ensure smooth project execution. He underscored the necessity of proactively addressing connectivity and public concerns through meticulous planning, positioning the Parvatmala initiative, connecting one end to another end easing problem for the people, as a catalyst for sustainable development in Mizoram’s hilly landscape. He further emphasized the need to consider ways to effectively implement this scheme in collaboration with other line departments.
Shri Vinay Kumar, Additional Secretary, MoRTH, reaffirmed the ministry’s unwavering commitment to driving ropeway projects in Mizoram. He highlighted that the Parvatmala programme is designed to enhance connectivity in mountainous regions, with 90% of the generated revenue earmarked for reinvestment into local development, fostering economic growth and infrastructure progress.
UD&PA Secretary Pu Lalmalsawma Pachuau delivered an insightful PowerPoint presentation, detailing the proposed ropeway corridors for Aizawl and its surrounding areas under the ‘Ropeways Under Aizawl Sustainable Urban Transport Project (ASUTP).’ He outlined the Comprehensive Mobility Plan, spanning 280 square kilometers, aimed at decongesting Aizawl city. The plan encompasses ropeway, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, a regional truck terminal, enhanced bus and truck terminals and an upgraded public transport system, among other initiatives.
The meeting was also attended by Pu Ajit Roy, Secretary to the Governor; Pu Jacob Lalawmpuia, Director, UD&PA; Pu Prashant Jain, Vice President, NHLML and other senior officials from the UD&PA Department. This dynamic session marks a significant step toward redefining Mizoram’s urban mobility and infrastructure landscape, aligning with the visionary goals of the Parvatmala programme.
